Unlearning Patriarchy

A Recovery Guide

About

I created this blog to provide a fun resource for women curious about why so many of us have been subjugated by men for thousands of years, and why we need to stop it immediately.

I will probably add to this site for years but I wanted to start by uncovering what feels like mysterious forces. Why do we work so much harder than men? Why do we earn so much less? Why are we murdered, beaten and raped at rates that are so incredibly much higher than men? We certainly hear that society disapproves of these phenomena, but we are also provided with unconvincing arguments about why this happens to us in the first place and why it continues to be tolerated.

By summarizing what I have read over the years, I hope to convince you that patriarchy is an historical construct with a beginning, and can therefore be ended. We can just stop it. That is the main message of this blog.
I also hope to convince you that patriarchy is the root cause of the multiple crises we are currently contending with, and that exploitation of women is directly related to the exploitation of nature. If we keep enabling patriarchy, nature will die and then we are all dead. I am convinced that patriarchy is an existential threat to all life on earth except maybe bacteria and fungi. So this blog is a learning resource, but I hope you will also receive it as a warning and a call to resist.
Resistance doesn’t have to mean marching the streets in a pink toque, although that’s a lot of fun. It can also mean putting your feet up and not doing some things (such as all the fricken housework, or the crap tasks at work). It can mean that you nap and soak in a bubble bath a lot more. It can mean getting together with like-minded women and men, and doing things together. It can mean starting a garden, or helping a neighbour in trouble. It can mean tracking the antics of the people who benefit from patriarchy and spreading word of their crimes on social media. In other words, you can resist in a way that suits you best, as you can. But please do resist: Things are getting very weird and dangerous and it is definitely time to pick a side.
First, to smash the patriarchy, we need to understand what it is, why it exists, and who benefits from it. It is important to see that patriarchy developed for a reason, in certain conditions, and that patriarchy will be ended only if and when we address those reasons and change those conditions.
Finally, I wrote this blog because this is a legal, socially acceptable way to express my intense hostility toward the people who continue to benefit (hugely!) from patriarchy, and all other manifestations of inequality, without alienating every single person in my social circle. Writing allows me to organize and support my thinking instead of sputtering invectives and raving.
I hope you like it.
